O’SHAQUIE FOSTER SD12 over ROBSON CONCEICAO
O’Shaquie Foster earned a 12-round split decision over Robson Conceicao to win back the WBC super featherweight title on Friday night in Verona, NY. The fight was very close, as was their last one despite the narrative surrounding that one, but Foster did enough to earn the nod this time. Official scores were 115-113 Foster, 115-113 Conceicao, 115-113 Foster.
Foster (23-3, 12 KOs) was didn’t do much better over the first half of the fight than he did last July in losing his belt, but he turned it up down the stretch and outworked Conceicao (19-3-1, 9 KOs), including a big right hand in the 10th round that rocked the now-former champion.
The first fight was embroiled in a controversy created by the announcing crew on ESPN+. A close fight that could have gone 7-5 either way, it was determined by the on-air crew that Foster won 11 of 12 rounds and was the victim of one of the worst robberies in boxing history. It simply wasn’t the case.
These two have now fought 24 rounds and not much has separated them. Many of those rounds have been difficult to score with neither fighter being damaged no matter how much activity there was. Honestly, they weren’t great fights to watch. I would have been ok with a decision either way in the first fight.
This time around, both fighters said they were going to leave no doubt, indicating they would fight differently. Conceicao seemed to be following through over the first half of the fight, while Foster started and finished most exchanges over the last four or five rounds. Conceicao threw more punches overall (565/534) while Foster landed more (172/153). Foster outlanded Conceicao every round from the eighth on.
Both decisions were fair in my view and now the story can continue. I’m not a fan of a third fight. But we’ll probably see it.
RAYMOND MURATALLA TKO2 over JESUS PEREZ
WBC and WBO #2 lightweight Raymond Muratalla (22-0, 17 KOs) landed two home run right hands in the second round to score two knockdowns of Jesus Antonio Perez Campos (25-6, 18 KOs). The fight was stopped shortly after Perez got up after the second knockdown. Official time of the stoppage was 1:24.
Muratalla landed sharp punches with both hand and feasted on the come-forward style of Perez. Perez had not been stopped before in 30 fights which included matchups against Joseph Diaz and Brian Norman Jr.
Muratalla is calling for a title shot. The IBF has him ranked fourth and awaits a decision from its champion, Vasyl Lomachenko on possible retirement.
BRYCE MILLS TKO5 over MIKE OHAN JR.
Mills outworked and overwhelmed Ohan Jr. in a junior welterweight bout scheduled for eight. Mills (17-1, 6 KOs) came forward and used volume punching to easily win each round. Ohan Jr. (19-4, 9 KOs) wasn’t able to get off enough shots, though he did have success in isolated moments. Ohan Jr.’s corner stopped it at the end of the fifth.
IVAN NOVA and HUMBERTO GALINDO SD10
Split draw for junior lightweights Ivan Nova (23-3-1, 16 KOs) and Humberto Galindo (14-3-3, 11 KOs). Galindo landed a big right hand in the first round that wobbled Nova. The rest of the way there was little sustained action and most rounds were tough to score. Nova threw over 100 more punches than Galindo, yet only outlanded him by six.
