Lightweight Lorenzo Powell stayed unbeaten with a six-round shutout of Michael De La Cruz at the Memorial Civic Auditorium in Stockton, CA on Saturday night. Powell (4-0, 1 KO) overcame a cut from an accidental headbutt in round two and used elite hand speed and footwork to outbox the sturdy De La Cruz (2-5-2).

G1 Promotions put on the six-bout card, dubbed Back To The Future, which featured numerous young fighters in hotly contested fights.

Powell, from Sacramento, has had all four of his pro fights in Stockton after a standout amateur career.  A local favorite in “Fat City”, Powell returned to the venue where he scored his last victory in March. Shifting between southpaw and orthodox stances, “The Golden One” controlled the fight throughout.

After a good first round, Powell was in control in round two when the headbutt occurred and a cut opened over his left eye. It bled the rest of the way but didn’t cause any problems with vision.

De La Cruz pressed forward for the entire fight but was overmatched by Powell’s hand speed and precise shots. In round five, a big right hand knocked De La Cruz’ mouthpiece out.

For all six rounds, the enthusiastic crowd cheered, rocking the historic venue. In his post-fight interview in the ring, Powell said he would be back in August or September.

After the 10-7 opening round, Uvalle was trading with Xilohua in the second round when a big left hand sent the Texan back into is corner. Xilohua pounced on him and the referee waved it off at 1:46 of round two. It was the second straight knockout for Xilohua and the third in his last four fights.

UNDERCARD

TONY HIRSCH UD4 over FRANK REQUELLO

Hirsch (5-0-2, 3 KOs) scored two first-round knockdowns and went on to a shutout on all four cards. Requello recovered after the rough first round and pressed forward against the elusive Hirsch, but suffered his first pro defeat, dropping to 2-1 (2 KOs). Official scores were 40-35 X3.

JOHNIE WILLIAMS D4 with XAVIER DELUCA

After four hotly contested rounds, middleweights Johnie Williams (pro debut) and Xavier Deluca (0-1-1) had their bout declared a draw. Deluca stalked Williams for the first three rounds and landed some power shots. Williams was on the move but showed wobbly legs after some of the big shots landed.

In the fourth and final round, Williams went on the attack and let his hands go, getting the better of the resulting exchanges. While his slick movement had worked sporadically over the first three round, Williams showed he could be an offensive fighter.

IntheCorner.net scored this fight 39-37 for Deluca but only one of the official judges saw it that way, with the other two coming in at 38-38.

SALVADOR VELASQUEZ D4 with YISRAEL JUDAH

Junior middleweights Salvador Velasquez (1-0-1) and Yisrael Judah (0-0-1) fought to a four-round draw. This fight had a bar room brawl feel with both throwing a lot of shots but the awkward style matchups making it hard for either to sustain any rallies. Official scores were 39-37 for Velasquez, 38-38 and 38-38.

ALBERTO VELASCO UD4 over RAYMOND BENAVIDES

Lightweight Alberto Velasco won his pro debut in an entertaining four-rounder over Raymond Benavides (1-5-0). A very good tactical fight saw Velasco win all four rounds by close margins. Velasco showed fast hands and more precise shots while Benavides got in some clean shots along the way.
