MIKE TYSON – JAKE PAUL COVERAGE

I’ll be following along on the Netflix event tonight with fight results and some commentary on the Serrano-Taylor rematch as well as the headliner.

JAKE PAUL UD8 OVER MIKE TYSON

Pretty underwhelming. Either you like the “event” or you don’t. I’m ok with it. Mike had very little and Jake went easy on him. Fair enough. We got a couple of great fights on the undercard and a lot of eyes were on boxing tonight. Just my personal opinion but this new era of boxing is going quite well. Events such as

these, a lot of meaningful fights taking place over seas rather than in the U.S., it’s all good. I can understand anybody not being comfortable with the developments over the last few years but we’re going down a new path. I’m in.

Here’s my YouTube video looking at it the day after:

AMANDA SERRANO (47-2-1, 31 KOs) vs. KATIE TAYLOR (23-1, 6 KOs)

Rematch of a great fight in 2022. A bunch of belts on the line. 10 2-minute rounds.

OFFICIAL SCORES: 95-94 X 3 Katie Taylor.

Netflix unoficial has it 96-93 Serrano. I’d be fine with that.

RD10 – Wild round, wild fight. Whoever you rooted for won the rounds and the fight. I gave Taylor the last one as well for a one-point win. The point deduction is going to matter. I had it 10-9 Taylor, 95-94 Taylor. Let’s see the scores.

RD9 – There’s no way the judges are giving Taylor all these rounds but I am. I have it 10-9 Taylor, 85-85 right now. I expect Serrano to be ahead on the cards. Just a gut feeling. I could very well be wrong.

RD8 – Taylor warned and then a point taken away for headbutts. Taylor won the round but a point was deducted. 9-9. 76-75 Serrano.

RD7 – War. Serrano’s corner almost stopped it between rounds. Serrano came out firing and Taylor met her. I think Taylor pulled this one out too with more power shots landing. Serrano bleeding badly. 10-9 Taylor, 67-66 Serrano.

RD6 – The cut broken wide open by another butt. Just lefty/righty matchup problems. I give this round to Taylor but I would imagine the judges are going the other way. 10-9 Taylor, 58-56 Serrano.

RD5 – Slight edge to the pressing Serrano. Another bad headbutt from Taylor on the same spot for Serrano, drawing blood. 10-9 Serrano, 49-46 Serrano.

RD4 – A lot of back-and-forth, Serrano’s shots heavier. Serious action. Headbutt openeda  cut on Serrano. 10-9 Serrano, 39-37 Serrano.

RD3 – I feel like Taylor is getting more done but Serrano’s output is more impressive and probably getting the 1o-points. 19-9 Serrano, 29-28 Serrano.

RD2 – Close round, maybe Taylor. Katie got a few combinations home. Serrano stalking. 10-9 Taylor, 19-19.

RD1 – Serrano lands a home run left hand just before the bell. Tight, tactical round until then. 10-9 Serrano.

MARIO BARRIOS (29-2, 18 KOs) Split Draw 12 ABEL RAMOS (28-6-2, 22 KOs)

WBC welterweight champ Mario Barrios defends his title against #7 Abel Ramos next. Barrios’ most recent losses are to Tank (TKO11 in 2021) and Keith Thurman (UD12 in 2022). Ramos has six losses, which would indicate the champ has the upper hand here.

Not much in the first round but a straight right hand made Ramos buckle his back leg and nearly go down. Barrios didn’t follow up so it was a bit of an odd sequence.

Ramos down at the end of round two from another right hand that was the back end of a one-two. The left hook grazed Ramos’ chin but the straight right landed on the bullseye. That punch is going to be a problem for Ramos all night.

In rounds three and four, the challenger gave Barrios more to think about and the fight turned competitive. Barrios still comfortably ahead, but not just one-way traffic.

Barrios won round five but Ramos got in a couple of right hands in the last minute that were more effective that what he’s being doing so far. Could be nothing, but worth noting.

And….down goes Barrios from a right hand. Big round six for Ramos. Floors the champion with a series of big shots, and Barrios was hurt. He made it to the end but got wobbled again just before the bell.

Netflix showed a scorecard with Barrios winning all six rounds after he just got decked in the last round. That’s concerning. Not that they thought Barrios won that round, I’m sure they didn’t. But how do you write those numbers and not know that a huge change just happened and the guy that had a shutout going was just on the wrong end of a two-point round? You can’t write “60” and hand that in.

Seventh and eighth felt like Ramos is getting stronger and Barrios is in the deep water with a long way to go.

Barrios got back on the attack in round nine but he took a lot of shots. Ramos could be catching him on the cards if he’s won 6-9 like i think he has.

After 10 it’s an intriguing fight. Both guys have been down, both are a little busted up and bleeding. Barrios seems to be back from the damage he took in the middle rounds and both guys are throwing power shots.

Not sure which way 11 went. This is a guts contest at this point. Really good fight. It didn’t start that way, but once Ramos heated up after the slow start it got really good.

They gave it what they had left in the 12th. I feel like Barrios keeps his title. Let’s see the scores. They better be close. Any 118-108 card should be the end of any judges’ career.

114-112 Ramos 116-110 Barrios 113-113

SPLIT DRAW

WHINDERSSON NUNES (2-2-1, 1 KO) UD6 over NEERAJ GOYAT (18-4, 8KOs)

Totally oddball setup here, appropriate for a show that is a boxing “event.” BoxRec shows Nunes as a pro debuter but he was announced as 2-2-1 with 1 KO. Goyat has fought most recently at 146 1/2 and prior to that he’s been from 140 1/4 to 149 1/2 over the last three years. And tonight, they’re fighting at 165.

First round shows two non-serious fighters. Honestly, I’m going to step out for this one.

I’ll be following along on the Netflix event tonight with fight results and some commentary on the Serrano-Taylor rematch as well as the headliner.
